This pair of chairs are believed to be from an overseas trip in Mid-20th Century or earlier. They are typical of the Italian Renaissance with gorgeous detailed hand-carved Florentine backs and armrests. Part of the amazing finishing touches are the detailed lion heads. They have beautifully handcrafted curved slatted seats and legs. The ability to remove the back piece and fold these up make them easy to move or store. Overall these chairs are in excellent condition and any wear is from age and normal use. The Savonarola chair is a type of folding chair with an X frame when viewed from the front or back. It was designed to fold so it was portable and used during campaigns or other outdoor pursuits. The title Savonarola comes from the name of Italian Renaissance Dominican friar, Girolamo Savonarola, who is renowned for his clash with tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy.
