Estate Find  Prince of Wales Plume and Drapery Hepplewhite Shield Backed Dining Chairs We offer an antique set of shield backed mahogany Hepplewhite dining chairs comprising of five sides and one arm chair. The elaborately detailed chair backs feature a central balloon shield supporting the Prince of Wales plumes on the central axis flanked by half fan carved enrichments which alternate with the peripheral interlacing shields. Carved drapery swags unite the supporting posts with additional carved elements along the vertical supports. The front legs are tapered and detailed with satinwood stringing. The upholstered seats are supported by jute webbing and are underlined with a black dust cloth. The pink and blue striped covering is a woven fabric with self piped trim. The side chair frames measures 40" in height. The seat measures 2 1" in width and 18" in depth with a seat height of 19 1/2". The arm chair frame measures 40" in height. The seat measures 22" in width and 19" in depth with a seat height of 19 1/2". The arm chair height is 27 1/2". The arm chair has a solid restoration at the joint of the left facing arm to the chair back as seen in the photographs. The left leg facing of the same arm chair has a restoration to a splinter of wood on the inside edge of the leg below the seat rail which probably occurred at some time during a previous reupholstery. Overall each chair is solid in construction with minor wear marks consistent to age and use. The chairs are English in origin, probably early nineteenth century, and were acquired from a New England estate during the 1980s. The chairs once graced a residence at The Dakota in New York City. Provenance of Janette Powell Patterson. Austin native Janette Powell Patterson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 and earned her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1973. From September 1973 to October 1974, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harold R. Tyler, Jr., then United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. She was then associated with the New York law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell before being assigned to the Criminal Division of the United States District Court - Southern District of New York. She served as a member of the Organized Crime Task Force and received an award for her narcotics and fraud prosecutions. During her time in New York she also served on the Board of Directors of The Dakota, the famed New York apartment building, and as Officer and Organizer of Events on the Board of Directors for the New York Federal Bar Council. Justice Patterson returned to Austin in 1988. She served as a federal prosecutor, as an adjunct and assistant professor at the University of Texas Law School, and worked for the law firm of Johnson & Swanson before returning to private practice. She successfully campaigned for a seat on the Texas Third Court of Appeals in 1998 and 2004. She joined the faculty of Baylor Law School in 2012 as a Justice in Residence. Justice Patterson has served as Chair of the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas; as Chair of the appellate judges of the State Bar judiciary section; and as Trustee of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism. She is a frequent speaker and lecturer and has been awarded multiple honors, including the Travis County Women Lawyers' Association Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003 and the University of Texas Friar Outstanding Alumna in 2004.
