Model J16 Rocker by Hans J. Wegner for FDB Møbler, designed in 1944 and manufactured in 1969. One of Wegner's earliest furniture designs, this Shaker inspired rocking chair displays all of the hallmarks of Wegner's work: a chair that is beautiful from all sides, with comfort, functionality, and impeccable and visible craftsmanship. The spindled back and curved armrests reflect the Shaker / Windsor influence, but in true Danish modernist style, we see the omitting of any unnecessary ornamentation. Smooth and easeful rocking functionality, with arms that sit at just the right height for a relaxing sit. Solid beechwood frame with woven papercord seat, in original state as found, with the exception of a gentle cleaning and application of a transparent oil. The darkening of the wood and the papercord after 54 years has resulted in a gorgeous, warm, honey tone to the wood as well as a lovely patina to the papercord. You simply can't get this look from a new reproduction.
The underside of the arm is branded by FDB and denotes its production date of October 2, 1969.
The frame is structurally sound with no movement in the joints or indication of any issues. Wood shows typical signs of cosmetic wear and age such as small scuffs and areas of discoloration, but shows beautifully overall. Papercord is in excellent structural condition, with some discoloration (lightening, likely water stains -- see photo #7). The surface history makes for a rich and interesting example of a Danish modern design classic, designed by the Master of Chairs.

This is the best way to safely transport special vintage pieces, but it does take longer than regular shipping -- it usually takes a couple weeks upfront for me to arrange the shipper and for them to pick up the piece, and then another couple weeks for the transport, depending on your location and the driver's route. If you live in a building requiring stair carry of the item, live in an area that is more challenging to access, or have other unique delivery parameters, the shipping cost could be affected. I'll send you a message upon purchase to review these details.
